Vientiane ready for New Year parties

Residents and tourists in Vientiane have four main choices of venue for the New Year countdown on Monday night – Nam Phou Fountain, the National Culture Hall, the Mercure hotel and Lao-ITECC. Coloured lights and other decorations now line the streets and entertainment venues are gearing up for the big event.

The parties in Vientiane may not be as big as in New York, Sydney or other cities around the world, but people here will actively celebrate and enjoy live music and both modern and traditional dances as they wish each other a Happy New Year.

am Phou on Setthathirath Road will be a focal point for young people to gather and dance to live music while a DJ will also entertain revellers

The National Culture Hall also offers up a party, where you can dance the lamvong or anything else that takes your fancy. Popular singers from Indee Records and bands will be on stage to entertain guests while the countdown will be initiated by VIPs with a DJ providing song and dance music until the end.

The party gets going at 7pm and may already be familiar to locals as it is a nightly event running from December 27 until New Year’s Day.

The Mercure and Lao-ITECC are holding gala dinners for the countdown where you can drink and dine to your heart’s content and dance the night away.

There will be music and lamvong dancing, live bands, a fashion show and a wide variety of Lao and international food served buffet style.

If you’re looking for something a little more intimate, however, you can attend any number of countdown parties at the more well-known nightclubs and pubs in Vientiane.
